Wishlist: ALERTS and more
Posted by seinloft on May 14, 2007 at 17:36Dear all,
since I’m now playing for one week with PANDORA 1.2 I’m missing some suitable functions in it. Beside this for me PANDORA fits perfectly in our IT environment. Having 8 locations around Europe and centralized and decentralized hardware (80 servers) with mostly all windows software. In addition to this we run a central SAP R/3 system, BW and APO. Next week I’ll try the SAP R/3 agents on our test systems.
So now my wish list focused on the ALERTS:
1) As one other already has requested UP alerts. It’s nice to see alerts when something fails, but if you have more then 1 IT stuff emplyee, for all others it will be great to see that nothing has to be done any more 😉
2) Time frames for alerts. Since some systems went down for regular backup or planed maintenances daily or weekly reboot of windows servers. My Inbox is filled with “SPAM” every morning even when everything is fine before working hours.
3) Min and Max values in the pandora agent information view is mixed up for me. It shows Max/Min even if the heading says Min/Max.
4) Dependency’s would be great. If our leased line is broken for one of our major location, again my Inbox will be messed with mails even if only the router or switch was the problem.
5) Graphical overview of the managed machines. At the moment you can split up the agents into groups, perhaps it is possible somewhere in the future to display a graphical layout of the machines including dependency’s.
6) Adding some more placeholders into the alerts message. At the moment I only know of _AGENT_ and _DATA_. Min and Max Values are suitable description of the alert. This makes it easier to copy alerts to other machines with different values.
7) Once the alert is sent, there is now need to resend it even if the min value is passed. This only makes sense if I received an UP alert. At the moment I receive every time the values changes below the min value an alert.
I know some of this wishes are already added but some are new. Perhaps they will be implemented in the release 1.3 or at last in 2.0.
Thank you very much, your doing a great job!

Thanks for your detailed comments and feature highlight for next versions ! :-). Almost all of them are well-known needs for many users and for SURE will be implemented, most of them for upcoming 2.0 version.
Many of that features will be condensed on the future condicional alert system who allow to fire condicional alerts and allow to fire alers when monitor values coming up from a down state, and of course stablish dependencies.
Currently are a javascript graphical console in trunk code repository, but it’s too inmature and buggy to publish in current development version (1.3) but for sure some of this code will be used in 2.0 to have a more graphical representation of infraestructure.

Hello,
do you think, that the alerting advantages will be ready with release 1.3 or do I have to wait for 2.0 at the end of this year?
8.) One more wish for me is to activate and deactivate an alert. Sometimes this would be great not to delete the alert and then create it again after a while.
I’m looking forward for the new release and the great functions.
Kind Regards,
Sascha Einloft

For alert complex condition feature until 2.0 will not be ready. We have already implemented a feature to disable a complete alert group, to “freeze” groups and don’t fire alerts. I’ll add an alert disable field for 2.0 also.
