  • Installed 3.0Rc2 opensuse11 version: working fine but got some questions

Posted by blackdir on December 11, 2009 at 12:51

    Hello to everybody,

I’m a newbie: I just installed the new 3.0RC2 version by using the opensuse 11 ISO from SF.net.

The installation run fine and I the customer I’m showing it to is quite happy… in just half days the system is already monitoring a couple of XP servers (via the 3.0RC1 agent) and network devices (routers and firewalls using host_alive ICMP module).

I have a couple of questions (please forgive me if they are FAQ: I browsed the available docs but didn’t find an immediate answer):

A – I installed pandora 3.0 using English language, but the operator that will use the system at the customer don’t speak English… is there a symple way to switch we console language to Italian? (if Italian is not available, is there a file where I can add the italian translation and make it work?)

B – during the installation I got an error related to repond.xml on opensuse repositories (error was related to KDE4). Is it an important error?
Is there a way to fix it? (in other words do you know the proper url that I need to add in to be able to keep updated my system?

C – I’d like to setup emails alert whenever an item stay down for more than 5 minutes. How can I do it? Shall I only modify pandora_server.conf to add my SMTP server or shal I also install postfix/sendmail on opensuse11? After that how can I create a default mail message mentioning name of item down + timestamp and apply it to all the item I’m monitoring?

D – I saw in the screenshots section that is possible to have a map where items are shown in their geographic location. How can I create that?

thanks in advance for your support and patience!

    Hi blackdir,

A: In latest version (will be the final release) a user could set a different language than the “default” and the italian language will be totally translated. You can get this from our code repository (see development section in pandoramfs.org) or just wait a few days. Final version will be launched BEFORE 2010 for sure.

B: It’s a problem on some installs without connetion to internet, nothing to worry, just cannot update the software repo, but there is nothing broken ! 🙂

C: One thing is to configure SMTP options (in pandora_server.conf) and other is how to setup the alerts, is not easy because alert system is complex, I can reply you here with a huge post but I think is better you read docs about this, includes screenshots:

    I hope this will help

    Hello Sancho,
    thanks for your prompt reply.

Regarding A, I’ll wait then the final release.

Would it be an upgrade path that doesn’t require me to re-add all agents?
As my installation it is just a test for the customer, I’m not interested in keeping the captured data regarding systems (agent) availability… what I’d like to keep is Pandora configurations, such as the agents that I created and their modules. Is there a way to back it up and then re-import?

B: It’s a problem on some installs without connetion to internet, nothing to worry, just cannot update the software repo, but there is nothing broken ! 🙂

Is it the case? After that error, I saw the system properly downloading data from packman repository… additionally if I try to do a software update (via yast) I get the same error but my internet connections is working fine

Finally, do you have any anser for me also on my D question? ;-P

    thanks

To update to final 3.0 version from a 3.0RC version is just, put the code overwritting the old one, without reinstalling or upgrading, in a rpm system something like:

    rpm -i xxxxx –force xxxx.rpm

    Voilá !

(backing up some .conf first, but nothing more).

Expected date for final release is 22 Dec 2009.
