  • Component group

    Posted by Robb11 on octubre 25, 2007 at 14:12

I have created a Component group called Cisco 4507 and I have added to it some specified OID for all its nics. Fantastic! But now? I cannot associate it to an agent and, creating a network template, I cannot refer to it, but to its modules listed with the one of other Component groups without any filter.
So that, what’s the use of the Component Group?

You have to create the modules in the Network component management then you’ll be able to see all of them in the “module menu”, that’s to say, you’ll be able to create network templates and give them the modules you feel like 🙂

    Cheers

Well, the steps you have to follow are (names are only examples):

    1) Create the component Group name “Cisco4507” (Administration > Manage Modules > Component Groups), parent Cisco MIBS
    2) Create the network Component, module name Cisco4507_oid1 (Administration > Manage Modules > Network Components), in the Group combo, select “Cisco2507”.
    3) Create a network template, name “Cisco4507 OIDS” (Administration > Manage Modules > Network Templates)
    4) Enter to the new created template, and go to Add Modules section, and add the module(s) you have created, at this moment only Cisco4507_oid1 / Cisco4507 is available, at the end of the combo.
    5) Create your agent and in the “Module Assignement” Section, from Modules Tab, use “Cisto4507_oid1/Description” in the Network Component combo (this combo is ordered alfabetically).

Maybe I have write some mistakes on names, but process is this 😀

    Regards,

    Raúl

    😀
So that… I understood well. Just a note. In very large enterprises the NetworkComponent/NetworkGroup dropdown combobox at point 4 could be very log and difficult to be managed. For example, for my Cisco Core 4507 I have created 224 oids which are different (sigh!) from other Cisco devices. Don’t you think it could be better to create two different combobox? The first one, the Network Group, which behaves as a filter and the second one which collects only the Network Components of the group (and recursively of its parents).
If I have a bit of spare time I will do this modify for my monitor system and I will let you know.

Thanks a lot for the explanation.

    Robb.

PS: I know there is a forum for wishes and improvements, but my reply was understandable only reading the Raul’s answer.

I’m agree with you. We also wanted to add more filters and combos but nil (project leader) is still on his wedding holidays to change it right now :-D.

Can you add this request to the “feature request” section at sourceforge (http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=155200&atid=794855)?

    Regards,
