But we\u2019ll also <strong>analyze the risks and limitations<\/strong> hidden beneath all the marketing and noise around the topic.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"1\">Why is generative AI transforming IT management?<\/h2>\n<p>Even though Skynet remains fiction (for now), it\u2019s undeniable that generative AI is changing the daily routines of CISOs, IT managers, and service managers.<br \/>\nIts relevance, moreover, cuts across many areas:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"lista\">\n<li>In <a href=\"https:\/\/pandorafms.com\/en\/itsm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ITSM<\/a>, for instance, it may automate and customize user interactions.<\/li>\n<li>In <a href=\"https:\/\/owasp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">cybersecurity<\/a>, it may simulate attacks, analyze patterns, and proactively detect threats.<\/li>\n<li>In general IT infrastructure management (on-premise and cloud), it may <a href=\"https:\/\/pandorafms.com\/en\/it-topics\/managed-service-provider-msp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">optimize resources<\/a> and predict failures, for example.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, whether we like it or not, the AI train has arrived at the station\u2014and while not everything that glitters is gold (a sensible stance), ignoring a train coming our way is never a good strategy.<br \/>\nLet\u2019s begin by understanding the foundations of the house.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"2\">What is generative AI and how does it work?<\/h2>\n<p>Generative AI is <strong>a branch of artificial intelligence that specializes in content creation<\/strong> in the form of text, images, code, audio&#8230; This is possible thanks to learning from large volumes of data during its training.<br \/>\nIt represents another step toward the eternal Trekkie promise of a world where machines do the heavy lifting while we paint and write poetry\u2014except now the AI writes and paints, while we keep clocking in.<br \/>\nThis marks another evolutionary stage within the main types of AI, which are:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"lista\">\n<li><strong>Traditional AI (or Analytic AI)<\/strong>: Focused on analyzing and classifying data, identifying patterns to make decisions (for example: a recommendation system or a spam classifier). The advantage is a greater analytical capacity compared to what humans can do by other means, being able to handle much more data and detect patterns that would go unnoticed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Predictive AI<\/strong>: Uses history data to predict future outcomes or possible events (for example: predicting server load or an imminent hard drive failure).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Generative AI<\/strong>: Goes a step further by using acquired knowledge to <strong>generate new artifacts based on its training data<\/strong> (for example: drafting a ticket response, generating a mitigation script, or creating code to interact with an API).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This generative AI works based on several key principles:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"lista\">\n<li><strong>LLM (Large Language Models)<\/strong>: These are large-scale language models, like GPT-4 or LLaMA, trained on massive amounts of data. Thanks to this, they may generate contextually relevant language and code (e.g., chatting with a user based on their input).<\/li>\n<li><strong>RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation)<\/strong>: This technique allows Large Language Models to search new information beyond what they were trained on. For example, we can provide them with private company documentation or allow them to search the web to enrich their knowledge and provide better answers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Multimodality<\/strong>: The ability of a generative model to understand and create content across different modalities, such as text, images, and\/or audio. For instance: a multimodal model could analyze a provided image to mimic its style or examine a performance chart and generate an explanatory text report.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"3\">What are the main types of generative AI and what are their applications in IT management?<\/h2>\n<p>Not all generative AIs are the same, nor do they work in the same way. Similarly, what they generate does not have the same usefulness when it comes to potentially helping us in IT management.<br \/>\nLet\u2019s take a look at the <strong>multiple types and their usefulness in our daily work<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Transformer Models (GPT and other LLMs)<\/h3>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/research.google\/blog\/transformer-a-novel-neural-network-architecture-for-language-understanding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">on August 31, 2017<\/a> Google researchers published their paper on Transformer (a novel neural network architecture for \u201cunderstanding\u201d language), they probably didn\u2019t anticipate the whirlwind that would be unleashed by the flap of that butterfly\u2019s wings.<br \/>\nSince then, the \u201cunderstanding\u201d (note the quotation marks) of language by these models is not only written language but also extends to audio and images.<br \/>\nTo do this, they analyze input segments in parallel through mechanisms called attention, assigning importance based on mathematical similarity calculations (or attention weights). From there, they provide a response according to the request.<\/p>\n<h3>How can it help us in IT?<\/h3>\n<p>In many ways, as this type of AI is <strong>the one with the most direct applications in an IT manager\u2019s job<\/strong>.<br \/>\nIt can help us with:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"lista\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pandorafms.com\/en\/blog\/it-task-automation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Automating responses<\/a><\/strong> to ITSM tickets.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Using chatbots as a first line of support<\/strong> for simple questions. For complex or large-scale code&#8230; Well, at the time of writing this (because no one can predict this kind of evolution), it depends on how much you enjoy the purgatory of endless debugging.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Generating synthetic data<\/strong> for internal applications or to fill the web design we\u2019ll present to management, since they said it wasn\u2019t professional to use Chiquito Ipsum&#8230;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Designing and improving architectures<\/strong>, giving us clues on how to optimize our IT infrastructure.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Analyzing <a href=\"https:\/\/pandorafms.com\/blog\/what-are-logs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">logs<\/a> and large data volumes<\/strong>. One is a generator that creates fake data, and the other is a discriminator that tries to distinguish between real and fake data.<br \/>\nThis competition enables improvement.<\/p>\n<h4>How can it help us in IT?<\/h4>\n<p>In several ways, with interesting applications in cybersecurity:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"lista\">\n<li>For example, with <strong>synthetic data to train intrusion detection systems<\/strong> without risking real sensitive data. The generator creates fake malicious network traffic indistinguishable from the real thing, training and improving the detection system (which here would be the discriminator). This is <strong>complex<\/strong> in practice and probably not worth the effort in many cases, but it&#8217;s not technically impossible.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Creating <a href=\"https:\/\/pandorafms.com\/en\/it-topics\/what-is-malware-how-to-prevent-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">synthetic malware<\/a><\/strong>, although differently from how an LLM would do it. With its adversarial approach and good data, it could create malware variants that try to trick the system\u2014helping us vaccinate against such attacks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>VAE (Variational Autoencoders)<\/h3>\n<p>These are models that learn a compressed and possible representation of input data. With that, they may generate new instances that are variations of the original data.<\/p>\n<h4>How could it help us in IT?<\/h4>\n<p>Here we are stretching it and trying to use tools in IT management that aren\u2019t the most appropriate.<br \/>\nStill, a VAE could learn the normal representation of a server\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/pandorafms.com\/en\/it-topics\/what-is-a-server\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CPU usage<\/a>. Based on that, any significant deviation from this representation could be marked as a potential anomaly, indicating a <a href=\"https:\/\/pandorafms.com\/en\/it-topics\/attack-ddos-security\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DDoS<\/a> or hardware failure.<br \/>\nHowever, I insist, <strong>this is not the right tool<\/strong>, and classic Machine Learning will perform much better here.<\/p>\n<h3>Diffusion Models<\/h3>\n<p>These are often known for image generation (like Stable Diffusion), and they work by gradually adding noise to training data. Then they learn to reverse the process and generate new data from the noise.<\/p>\n<h4>How could it help us in IT?<\/h4>\n<p>Again, diffusion models are not the most useful for the daily Sisyphus grind of IT management, but they could help generate synthetic data to test <a href=\"https:\/\/pandorafms.com\/en\/siem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SIEMs<\/a>, for example.<br \/>\nHowever, other types of AIs, like LLMs, are far more suitable for these tasks.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"4\">What benefits does generative AI bring to IT management?<\/h2>\n<p>Considering the above, it\u2019s clear that <strong>if AI can be correctly integrated<\/strong> into our <a href=\"https:\/\/pandorafms.com\/en\/it-topics\/guia-de-bpm-gestion-de-procesos-empresariales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">work processes<\/a>, we could obtain potential benefits such as:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"lista\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pandorafms.com\/en\/it-topics\/it-operational-efficiency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Operational efficiency<\/a> and lower costs<\/strong>: Automating repetitive tasks frees IT teams to focus on higher-value challenges. Because at the time of writing, <strong>generative AI still has significant limitations and risks<\/strong>.<br \/>\nAnyone who has deeply used this technology, or truly understands how it works, knows that in the complex day-to-day of real-world work, <strong>managing these risks is essential<\/strong>.<br \/>\nOtherwise, we\u2019ll soon realize that not everything that glitters is gold, causing serious issues with severe consequences, due to&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3>Bias and hallucinations<\/h3>\n<p>This is crucial and must be well understood, rather than blindly following marketing or the countless self-proclaimed gurus popping up like mushrooms.<br \/>\nLanguage models <strong>often generate incorrect or fabricated information<\/strong> (commonly referred to as \u201challucinations\u201d) and can perpetuate biases found in their training data.<br \/>\nAnd <strong>this is not solved by newer versions<\/strong> or \u201cbetter\u201d training.<br \/>\nEven OpenAI itself, creator of the famous ChatGPT, has finally admitted what any knowledgeable user already knew:<br \/>\n<strong>Hallucinations are mathematically unavoidable and a key feature<\/strong> of language models.<br \/>\nTherefore, they\u2019re not engineering flaws \u2014 they are <strong>an essential and inevitable trait<\/strong>. A language model is like your overly confident uncle at Christmas: it cannot remain silent or say \u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d and you must be cautious about what it says or does.<br \/>\nFor that reason, you may not assign it critical tasks <strong>without expert human oversight<\/strong>.<br \/>\nHere are a couple of serious IT risk examples:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"lista\">\n<li>A faulty automation script could cause a critical outage.<\/li>\n<li>An audit or <a href=\"https:\/\/pandorafms.com\/blog\/it-nis2-safety-guide-directive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">regulatory compliance report<\/a> is generated with errors. This results in two dreaded papers: the massive fine for non-compliance and your severance package.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Privacy and compliance<\/h3>\n<p>Let me repeat: <strong>absolutely never assign a language model anything related to regulatory compliance<\/strong> without a review by an expert human.<br \/>\nAdditionally, using public models may involve sending sensitive corporate data to an external environment, violating regulations like the GDPR.<br \/>\nIt is critical to use private models or otherwise ensure data privacy.<\/p>\n<h3>Deepfakes and security<\/h3>\n<p>As often happens with powerful technologies, malicious actors are early adopters.<br \/>\nThus, language models pose cybersecurity risks, such as:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"lista\">\n<li><strong>Enhanced phishing attacks with more elaborate and persuasive messages.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Creation of new malware<\/strong>, evasion mechanisms, or the design of sophisticated attacks.<\/li>\n<li>Image or audio deepfakes for crimes like impersonating employees or CEOs in social engineering attacks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"6\">How to adopt generative AI in an IT company?<\/h2>\n<p>Given the above, how do we integrate generative AI to &#8220;not fall behind&#8221; without triggering disasters?<br \/>\nThree basic principles:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"lista\">\n<li>Be <strong>gradual<\/strong>, starting with limited pilot projects.<\/li>\n<li>Be <strong>strategic<\/strong>. That is, aligned with our goals and how we achieve them (our culture), instead of forcing AI in just because it&#8217;s trendy or FOMO gets the better of us.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Apply expert human oversight<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, some best practices for implementation would be:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"lista\">\n<li><strong>Start with a pilot project<\/strong>: Choosing a specific use case, such as automating a particular type of <a href=\"https:\/\/pandorafms.com\/en\/blog\/what-is-ticketing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ticket<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Apply RAG<\/strong>: Model training may not be enough. It can also assist the technician with possible solutions to try if the issue persists.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"8\">What is the future of generative AI in IT?<\/h2>\n<p>We all love to play fortune-teller, but true experts in this field, when asked to predict the future of AI, often reply: \u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<br \/>\nThat\u2019s the honest answer, and it should be said more often.<br \/>\nBut these days that attitude is punished, and emerging trends point to a deeper and more autonomous integration through:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"lista\">\n<li><strong>Specialized autonomous agents:<\/strong> Not only generating responses, but planning and executing complex sequences of actions (e.g., completely solving an incident autonomously).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Multimodality in operations:<\/strong> A model analyzing an error log (text), a performance chart (image), and a latency metric (time series) simultaneously could provide a unified diagnosis.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Integration with AIOps:<\/strong> Generative AI will become the narrative and operational brain of AIOps platforms, explaining root causes of incidents and automating context-aware responses.
