How technology has helped our employees during this pandemic

Interview with Pandora FMS employees about the global pandemic

To be honest, I believe that it will take a lot of time to forget this. I don’t know if the 2020 pandemic of Covid-19 will be remembered exactly as grandparents remembered their wars or as unemployed people will remember economic crises, but of course it’s going to take long to forget this event on a global scale. Not only because of the planetary catastrophe that it has supposed, but also for the unfading mark of seeing the whole globe collaborate in a common cause. If we were to fight for other things together as we have fought for this, of course, we would go in another direction. To the stars.

One of the outstanding points in this issue has been the use of new technologies. They might be fed up with saving our butts over and over again, but they are always there, worthy, adequate, capable and ostensibly useful. The use they have been given has allowed us to save lives, communicate and let ourselves do our work, overcoming, as far as possible, the great obstacles that the pandemic has brought us. For this reason, we would like to ask some of our employees at Pandora FMS how they got by this global pandemic and how new technologies helped them.

Robin Izquierdo, Communication and Marketing

How have you been or are you handling this global pandemic?

In a thousand and one different ways. Without IT this pandemic would be much more difficult to cope with and the consequences would have been even worse. Thanks to technology, we have been able to work remotely, communicate with our families and friends and have fun during the confinement, among many other things.

How do you think new technologies are helping the world?

In a thousand and one different ways. Without IT this pandemic would be much more difficult to cope with and the consequences would have been even worse. Thanks to technology, we have been able to work remotely, communicate with our families and friends and have fun during the confinement, among many other things.

How do you think they have helped you?

For me they have been very important by providing the remote work option, which means a very considerable improvement in the quality of life. In Pandora FMS, we have been provided with many options to keep on telecommuting and that is something that is undoubtedly appreciated.

Raúl Martín, Support Technician

How have you been or are you handling this global
pandemic?

I have tried to take it with calm and serenity, my personality is like that too, so it wasn’t that hard. Apart from the concern we all have, I do not remember having critical moments. Maybe when I thought about doing cardio following youtubers. Those people are way too fit. Leggings will never fit me like that.

How do you think new technologies are helping the world?

Well, I think that, the times we are living in, they have helped more than ever. In our case, thanks to them we have been able to do our work the same way as before the pandemic. That is a big step. Now people will only have to install a coin-operated coffee machine at home to believe they are in the real office.

How do you think they have helped you?

In a positive way, of course. If they told me years back that there would be a global pandemic and that my work would not be affected at all, and all thanks to technology, it would have been hard for me to believe. I would also have thought of zombies or deserts created by radioactive explosions where everyone is armed and wearing leather. That’s what I used to think when someone said “global pandemic.”

Sancho Lerena, CEO of Pandora FMS

How have you been or are you handling this global pandemic?

This is an opportunity to rethink many things and make big changes. Overlooking the negative aspects, such as the first months of forced confinement, I think it has been an extraordinary time to change our mindset. Furthermore, I am sure that if another time of confinement comes, we will be able to take advantage of it even better.

How do you think new technologies are helping the world?

Video calls have helped us keep humanity in a very dark time at the beginning of the 21st century. Technology makes it possible to humanize aspects that, without it, would be much more difficult to overcome.

How do you think they have helped you?

I have greatly improved my musical skills. I have also realized that I am much more outgoing than I thought and how much I have missed socializing these months.

Julia Lerena, Administration and Proofreading

How have you been or are you handling this global pandemic?

Well, I suppose because of my introverted personality I don’t need such permanent contact with “the outside world.” I enjoy loneliness taking advantage to learn as much as possible as a self-taught person. I consider myself privileged for having, not just a balcony, but a beautiful terrace where I take care of my plants and sometimes I enjoy the company of people whom I appreciate to share a few beers at sunset, when the hot weather allows it.

How do you think new technologies are helping the world?

New technologies… Well, as in everything, in a good and a bad way. They are just a “tool”, it depends on how you use it and your good judgement. To the world, they neither help nor stop helping. Although knowledge is power, we should consider what kind of knowledge we are willing to assimilate. They have helped me, because I carefully select the contents that I want to “absorb”. On the Internet I have everything I need, YouTube is the best invention of Humanity, only comparable to air conditioning.

In any case, since technology has arrived, let it reach everyone. I say this because of the digital divide. There are also “classes” in this. For example, not all families whose children have not been able to attend school had the means available to connect virtually to their classrooms…

How do you think they have helped you?

Well, a lot. I have a “Luddite” part that hates changes and everything technological and digital, but I also know that it is a universe where if you have a good map and common sense, you can discover wonderful trails and open your mind.

Alejandro Fraguas, QA tester

How have you been or are you handling this global pandemic?

It was something “weird”, don’t you think? A totally new situation where you always wonder with uncertainty what will happen tomorrow or won’t. Watching the news didn’t help. For that reason, when I was suffering from frustration and incoherence, I would immerse myself in music or in reviewing my collection of models of Victorian Gothic theaters.

How do you think new technologies are helping the world?

Well, the new technologies are helping, you know, to make it easier to investigate the virus, to be in contact with each other despite the long distances, to make our day to day a little easier… Of course, we must always take them with caution, it can be a double-edged sword!A Nokia 3310 can be used to call someone as well as a throwing weapon.

How do you think they have helped you?

They have basically helped me to be in contact with my family that lives outside Madrid, as well as to make my remote work much easier and more affordable. Telecommuting has saved the world!

Rafael Amejeiras, project manager

How have you been or are you handling this global pandemic?

Personally, it has not affected me too much from day to day, since I am at home most of the time and due to the nature of our work the change has been almost imperceptible (well, there is more work).

Even so, that is my specific situation, but I am concerned about the effect it has on the world economy and above all I am disappointed by the general level of civility of the population. I believe that if we all followed the necessary measures, the effect and distribution of the virus could have been controlled.

How do you think new technologies are helping the world?

It seems to me that, in terms of communication, the world today is wonderful. It is possible to work on the other side of the world almost as if we were there. Everything is online and everything is super-connected. It is true that there are tasks that need to be done being actually present, but the possibilities that technology offers right now are impressive.

How do you think they have helped you?

Me? I make a living from this, for me new technologies are everything, business and pleasure. Not only my work but also my hobby, so it could be said that my whole life revolves around new technologies.

Eduardo Corral, Project Technician

How have you been or are you handling this global pandemic?

I’m still sane so I guess I can’t complain. I’ve never been someone who hangs out a lot, so it’s not affecting me as negatively as other people. I suffered for those who love hanging around in terraces of La Latina, clubbers and those who take Sunday strolls around parks, they must have had a hard time.

How do you think new technologies are helping the world?

New technologies have been essential in helping us all keep in touch. Without social networks and the new possibilities offered by our phones and the bandwidth we currently have, it would have been impossible for us to keep this new way of working and socializing. #FollowmeonInsta #Followback

How do you think they have helped you?

They have helped me keep that sanity I often talk about and feel so proud of. Without things like Discord, Netflix or my WoW subscription, I don’t think I would have been able to keep the mental freshness I have now. Imagine, what would I have done? Knit scarves for my nephews? Or worse, do sports online?

Dimas Pardo, Communication and Marketing

How have you been or are you handling this global pandemic?

I was lucky enough to spend the confinement with Netflix paid, a supermarket relatively close by and some new headphones that allowed me both to listen to music and to ignore the attempts of my neighbors to do any social event together through the windows, so pretty good. On top of that, none of my acquaintances has gotten sick, so I would say even “great”.

How do you think new technologies are helping the world?

Of course allowing influencers to stream online on Instagram, no. However, I think that without new technologies The Black Death would have had its long-awaited second part in 2020. It is true that globalization makes the virus spread faster, but it also allows communication and help between countries. Then add the use of new technologies to medicine and the exchange of ideas through online devices and I don’t think I need to say more.

How do you think they have helped you?

For now, they have helped me to keep my job, to help my parents not stress out about where I am every 20 minutes and not to die from this virus. Really, thank you, new technologies, for keeping me alive and being able to grow old by telling the story of this planetary crisis as if it were a genesic event on par with world wars, aspirin or the Beatles.
