Enterprise monitoring software: what to think about before choosing
Finding an enterprise monitoring software is not an easy task. On the one hand, there are multiple options on the market that offer solutions of all kinds. On the other hand, you know that the implementation and eventual replacement of a tool with these features can be a burden and that, if you make a bad decision, you will regret it later.
Therefore, in this article we are going to try to highlight some aspects that you should take into account when making a decision, in order to make the choice a somewhat simpler process.
You will think, of course, that we are stakeholders (Pandora FMS is an enterprise monitoring software!) and that what we want is for you to choose our software. And of course we do! But that does not mean this article cannot help you take into account some important aspects that will help you decide. Let’s begin!
How to choose an enterprise monitoring software: elements to take into account
What do you need to monitor?
Companies are complex ecosystems, and the technology that supports them is no less so. In the innerworks of a current company, we will find the intervention of a wide variety of information technologies, involving the operation of different services.
We can find servers, for example, that support both internal and client services. We will probably find networks, with all their associated devices (routers, switches, etc.). We will also find ever-changing applications that will require a significant adaptation effort from our monitoring software. We can even go further and need business process monitoring, or that of the incipient IoT.
To solve all these needs, the market offers 2 types of tools: on the one hand those that are in charge of very specific monitoring aspects, and on the other hand general-purpose monitoring tools.
Now think: What will my company monitor? If what you need is very basic monitoring, focused only on a very specific aspect, it is likely that simple tools will suffice, and even Open Source solutions. However, if your needs are broader, the software that offers you an “all-in-one” solution will make your task much easier (and is even likely to be cheaper than the sum of several separate solutions).
What will you need to monitor in the future?
Although we live in the present, the future always comes. As we said before, when it comes to enterprise monitoring software, a bad choice can be a heavy burden that you regret later. That is why we must also think now about what we will need tomorrow.
Do you have or work in a small company with no expansion plans or do you foresee that it will grow in the future? Do you intend to work with the minimum or do you know that you will keep on adopting new technologies? The first scenario has little to do with the second one.
In the context of these types of questions, a key concept appears when we talk about monitoring: scalability.
If your company intends to grow (be it in number of devices, infrastructure complexity or technology diversity) don’t think twice: you need a powerful and scalable monitoring software.
If, on the contrary, you work with little and you intend to continue like that for a long time, once again Open Source solutions can be a good option for your business.
Do you need a software for your company or a company for your software?
Have you not tried any of those software that need so many adaptations that there comes a time when you wonder what you are doing?
A good enterprise monitoring software should adapt to the needs of the company that uses it, and not the other way around. Yes, we already know that there are some software with long traditions, but that does not mean that the experience should become monolithic. On the contrary, it should help software developers to better understand the needs of their clients and know how to adapt it based on them.
If, in addition, the developers listen to their clients and incorporate their proposals into the development plans, so much the better. All of this is called “flexibility”.
Don’t forget about technical support
Sure, when we acquire a software tool, the last thing we usually think about is technical support, but when we talk about something as complex as a monitoring system, things are different.
Some monitoring solution manufacturers make it very clear: here is the software and from now on handle things on your own.
Is that what you want? Experience tells us, on the contrary, that having good support is essential when it comes to having a monitoring software, so do not forget to make sure before choosing what kind of support the solution you choose has.
And what about the license?
It is a problem that many companies find when hiring a monitoring software: no one understands the licenses.
From those that are very compartmentalized and include only some types of monitoring to exclude others, to those that hide all kinds of “traps” and make monitoring much more expensive than it seems -and than it should be. The market is full of solutions that offer overly complicated licenses.
Do you want to be clear about what you are going to be able to monitor and how much it is going to cost? Don’t hesitate, choose a monitoring software that comes with an easy-to-understand license.
And now let’s talk a little about Pandora FMS
