It is no longer a question of simply integrating new technology, without thinking too much about it, but this integration has become one of the strategic objectives of many companies, which consider it a priority objective due to the important repercussions it has on the functioning of the business.
Now, just like every project or strategy, there are people who carry them out. And in the case of digital transformation we can identify some key figures, which have a very important role to play.
9 important figures in the digital transformation
– The CEO (Chief Executive Officer)
The CEO is primarily responsible for the management and direction of the company, including strategic decision-making. Also known as an Executive Director or CEO, this will often be a role assumed by the company’s founder.
Considering this very relevant position, he/she will necessarily have a lot to say when it comes to digital transformation. It will be the main driving force behind measures involving innovation and will have the last word when it comes to taking major decisions.
– The COO (Chief Operating Manager)
He or she is one of the most relevant figures in the company, mainly in charge of directing the products offered by the business and one of the “right hands” of the CEO. Also known as Chief Operating Officer, their closeness to the CEO and their own role make them an important figure in decision making and strategy setting, including those related to the digital transformation of the company.
– The Chief Digital Officer
We know the Digital Director as Chief Digital Officer. It is probably the profile that has more direct attributions in terms of digital transformation, given that the development of this, is one of their main tasks (in fact, in some companies is directly referred to as Director of Digital Transformation). Thus, it will play an essential role in business areas that may be of great importance, such as e-commerce or the online presence of the company, and will have a close relationship with other management positions, such as the Head of Communications.
– The CTO (Chief Technology Officer)
The CTO or Director of Technology is another of the figures quite involved in the development of the digital transformation of the company.
The CTO is the person in charge of getting the company to take advantage of existing technologies. To achieve this, you must have both a broad technical knowledge and a good understanding of the business, which allows you to establish objectives and strategies at all times.

– The CIO (Chief Information Officer)
This is the Director of Information Technology. The CIO is the figure in charge of introducing and applying IT to the company, which, as you may suppose, implies a fundamental role when we talk about digital transformation. In direct contact with the CTO, in some companies both figures might be the same person.
– The CCO (Chief Communications Officer)
The CCO is the Head of Communications of the company. Their role is deeply involved in the process of digital transformation, as digital channels are increasingly important for business communication.
They will be in charge of directing the digital communication channels with customers and managing the digital reputation of the company. Due to the growing importance of new communication technologies, the CCO will have to know them in depth and take the necessary measures to take advantage of them.
Due to the nature of its mission, they will need to be in continuous contact with the other departments, in order to ensure that the company’s image is as positive as it is coherent.
– The Chief Data Officer
The Chief Data Officer is a newly created position (in fact, it does not exist in most companies), born out of the growing importance of good data management for businesses. In addition to managing the data, the Data Manager will be in charge of analysing these data and maintaining communication with the different departments of the company, in order to take advantage of their analysis in the form of various strategies and measures.
– The CCEO (Chief of Customer Experience Officer)
The figure of the CCEO, or Head of Customer Experience, barely existed before the digital transformation processes. The CCEO is the main responsible for ensuring that the experience that customers have in their contacts with the business at all stages in which it takes place (time of purchase, customer service, etc.) is satisfactory to the greatest extent possible. Keep in mind that a large part of these experiences will be carried out by digital means, it must be directly involved in the process of digital transformation, and in continuous contact with other figures, such as the CCO.
– The CMO (Chief Marketing Officer)
Finally, we have the Director of Marketing. A profile increasingly linked to digital technologies: their omnipresence forces the CMO to assume a relevant and active role. The Marketing Director should be familiar with new technologies and, in particular, new advertising and promotional channels. Likewise, in collaboration with the CDO, he/she must be able to interpret and use Big Data in whatever may be useful to the business.
